D.J. Pestell - New Hamburg

Don J. Pestell Ltd comprised several businesses operating actively at their existing facilities on Hamilton Road in New Hamburg. These companies deal in pet products, mineral and feed ingredients and trucking. After Pestell purchased a neighbouring parcel of agricultural and wooded property and had preliminary plans completed, Nith Valley was hired on a Construction Management basis. Nith Valley assisted in preliminary budgeting for the overall project and worked along with the design team in the detailed working drawing stages. We carried forward and acted as the Constructor for the project handling the same role as the general contractor.

Preliminary sitework and grading commenced in fall 2005. Upon receipt of the foundation permit in late November the new warehouse footing installation started. Foundation work carried through a portion of the winter months to ensure structural steel could be erected immediately when available. A portion of the packaging facility structure included a raised roof height of 36’. The new facility was completed and ready for occupancy and owner use on September 5/06.

All work associated with the existing facilities and yardwork upgrades had to be completed while maintaining existing operations at all times. With Pestell’s very active trucking business, this was a definite challenge. 

 This industrial project included:

• 64,000sf new sprinklered warehouse and packaging building
• expansion of site to adjacent 7.9ha agricultural and wooded/wetland adjacent lands
• site service and grading upgrades to the existing 2.7ha property roadways/gravel yard
• large capacity storm water management area servicing the entire new and existing areas
• adding site fire hydrant protection to existing operation buildings
• adding sprinkler protection to existing Pet Production building
• preliminary sitework for new rail spur

In 2009 we were also involved with a Packaging Addition to the building with Mitchell Mill Systems. Our work involved sitework/foundations for the addition and bins, masonry and cladding the 75’ high bin/tower structure, rail receiving and truck receiving areas.
