Fire damages House of Friendship site in Cambridge
It was Wednesday just before 3:30 a.m. that Cambridge fire crews received a 911 call for a blaze at a construction site on Concession Road near Eagle Street. The fire, which Cambridge platoon chief Mike Pauze said is believed to have started in the back west corner of the property, caused extensive damage to the building that was undergoing renovations to house the addiction centre. On Wednesday, he estimated the fire caused damage of up to $500,000.
On Tuesday, a day before the fire, Waterloo Region's administration and finance committee voted in favour of giving the House of Friendship a $150,000 grant to help with the cost of the new centre. Waterloo Region council will have to approve the grant at a meeting next week.
